Bio: 

Tiana Galloway is a PhD in history student. She is from Raleigh, North Carolina and obtained her Bachelor of Arts in History at North Carolina State University. Tiana's research focuses are Black American sports history in the mid-Twentieth Century. Along with researching Black American athletes, Tiana also finds interest in studying Black education during Reconstruction.

Tiana's dissertation will analyze the success of Black high school athletes in North and South Carolina from the 1940s to the 1970s. She plans on addressing the lack of resources, equipment, and financial support of the athletic programs at Black public high schools. She argues that Black athletes could advance to their full potential in their sport, whether it be the athlete advancing to play the sport in college or professional leagues. Tiana plans on looking at the support athletes received from their teachers, coaches, and community to help advance their careers. Her dissertation also highlights Black athletes that were involved with the Civil Rights Movement and had successful careers outside of sports, while attributing their athletic careers to their future success.

Along with working towards her PhD, Tiana is working towards her MA in public history. Tiana has worked on a couple of public history projects while working towards her degree. While working towards her bachelor's degree in history, Tiana was introduced to public history in her internship with the Johnston County Heritage Center. At the Johnston County Heritage Center, Tiana helped document the history of North Carolina's last (according to NC SHPO) extant freedmen schoolhouse in Smithfield. In between her undergraduate and graduate school careers, Tiana interned with the Historic Smithfield Foundation researching and locating historic properties in Smithfield, NC. While at UofSC Tiana has interned with the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission (SCAAHC), the Orange County Regional History Center, and UofSC’s Center for Civil Rights History and Research (CRC). At the SCAAHC, Tiana is researching and writing short blogs about African American history in SC and creating a mapping project of South Carolina stops in the Negro Motorist Green Book for the Commission website and their forthcoming publication about South Carolina Green Book stops. Tiana’s internship with the Orange County Regional History Center consisted of her transcribing oral histories conducted by the Center. After her second year of graduate school, Tiana has continued working with the SCAAHC and also was a research assistant for the CRC. At the CRC, Tiana researched the athletic history of Booker T. Washington High School (Columbia, SC) for a future exhibit of the high school.
